Sweden — Southwestern Archipelago

Southwestern Archipelago

Just a short ferry ride away from the vibrant university town of Gothenburg is Sweden’s Southwestern Archipelago.

We visited three of these islands: Marstrandsön, Styrsö, and Vrångö. On Marstrandsön we celebrated the most typical Swedish holiday of all — Midsummer — by decorating and dancing around a Maypole, explored an exhibit of Sweden’s most famous movie star and learned about a famous cross-dressing pirate.

On Styrsö, we explored the vibrant gastronomic scene based on what the island grows. On Vrångö, we went fishing, sang with the locals, and maybe, just maybe, kissed an eel. We never saw the sun actually set, and we ate too many cinnamon rolls to count.
